Makeup courses? Are they really worth completing?

To answer the question… absolutely YES! Although you may look at the price of a makeup course and be put off, after my experience I can certainly say they are absolutely worth it. Around the UK, professional makeup artists and salons offer makeup courses. The value of courses can vary from an affordable £50 right up to £9000, where you will be awarded ITEC Level 2 Diploma after completion.

For myself, I was interested in completing a 1:1 with a Pro MUA that I follow closely on social media. Although, I am obsessed with anything beauty and invest so much time and well… money, into my makeup kit, I still class myself as a beginner, prior to the course I hadn’t ever practiced performing makeup on anyone else!

I chose to complete my course with Miki Makeup and Co (@miki_makeup_co), where I had a three hour 1:1 lesson, taught by owner of Miki Makeup, @kimberleymakeupartist_. It was interesting and very exciting to be taught by Kim, as she has been a huge inspiration to me regarding my passion for makeup, following her Instagram and YouTube where she showcases her amazing talent as a MUA.

On the day I was provided with a model by Miki which was included in the total price (£185). I have watched YouTube tutorials to build on my skills, however actually shadowing an expert in person allowed me to gain skills grasp a true idea of how makeup should be applied, how to match shades to a client and even how to accurately hold brushes, all key to creating a flawless look.

I was able to choose the style of look I wanted to create, for this was a ‘half cut-crease’, one of the most trendy eye looks around at the moment. Kim started by demonstrating her skills on one side of the face, talking through the techniques and products whilst I watched and shadow her on the other side. I was able to gain expert knowledge of the eye area, face and lips.

I would say to any beauty novice, or even advanced MUA’s they are definitely worth doing, not only for building up artistry skills but also gaining confidence with applying makeup. A few pieces of important advice to take with you; ensure you take time to research the perfect course for you, and… have as much fun as possible!
